2 years ago we had a horrid problem with the winter moth, so my husband decided to try an experiment. We bought some tiki torches or whatever you call those things that keep bugs away in summer. We filled them with diesel fuel, and soon as we started seeing the winter moths, we lit them every night. We had several in our side yard where the oak trees are. We ran them every night and could observe the moths flying towards the flickering flames. Hopefully we were killing them. Then the snows came and we stopped, as we saw no more moths. This spring we had very very little problem with the little worms! And our lawn furniture didn't turn brown with their tiny poop pellets. So we are going to try the tiki-torch approach again this winter.

That is really interesting, Juicy Fruit chewing gum! And it actually kills them, whew, we might have to resort to this. Though our dog harasses them relentlessly and they tend to avoid the yard. They have dug tunnels in our retaining wall, which has caused some damage, so I put Irish Spring soap into their burrows. That seems to work and not kill them. But the main thing that has reduced the chipmunk population around here, is that we had to stop feeding the birds, as there were too many tree rats. And we arent allowed to shoot the tree rats(squirrels)any more. Well, some people do, but we cant as we have too many grandkids and dogs running around our yard.
