Using Windows As A Greenhouse
Recently, I had a few old windows laying around the house.  Rather than discard them, I decided to use them to start some seeds early in the garden.  By raising the windows slightly with some old pieces of wood I was able to create a greenhouse like structure.  This enabled the sun to heat the soil and the seeds germinated in what was fairly cold weather.

All seeds require different temperatures to germinate.  However, nearly all seeds need some degree of warmth.  I started some of my lettuce seeds under these windows even though the air temperature was going below freezing.

Since the windows were close to the ground I had  to remove them once the plants reached the window.  Also, I vented the windows on the days it was warm so the seeds and young plants did not get too hot.
