WHAT TYPE OF MULCH?
I look for organic mulch that mimics the floor of the forest closest. In our area, mulch is generally a bark and some other organic matter like leaves, twigs and grass. I like mulches that are not all dead wood as they tend to add more nutrients to the soil. Ask if the mulch is dyed. I don’t like to use dyed mulches, they fade and look unnatural.
WHEN TO MULCH?
You don’t have to mulch every year. If you still have mulch in the garden, it might enough to last through the season and save you some money. Using a good garden rake and some muscle you can turn over the old mulch and make it look good again.
