Its early April but there is not a shortage of chores around the house.   Here is my personal list of things to do this week.  Its a lot, but try to get as much done as possible now to enjoy the warmer weather later.

APRIL  WEEK 1

1. Put down pre-emergent onto the lawn to stop weeds and crabgrass.

Use something organic like corn gluten.  If you are seeding this year then DO NOT use a preemgerent unless it is specifically for new lawns.  Otherwise your seed will not germinate.

2. Prune up your fruit trees, blueberries, roses and other trees.  Its a great time to prune.  If you prune spring flowering plants you will lose some of the flowers for the year so be careful.

3. Clean up the garden beds.  Watch out for the new bulbs that are coming up.

4. Cut back last years ornamental grasses to the ground.

5. Cut back other perennials to the ground

6. Give evergreen shrubs a light shot of fertilizer using something organic for evergreens.  Look for products that are for evergreens.

7. Assess winter damage.  Note plants with damage and monitor.  Do not cut back as they might be alive.

8. Check lawn mower and have blades sharpened.

9. Hold off planting peas because its too cool and wet from NY north.

10. Run snow blower empty of gas and put away
