Annuals For Shade

>) is another type of impatiens that are not as popular now.  They need a few hours of sun to do really well, but can grow in shade.  They are also taller.

Wax begonia (Begonia x semperflorens) These are very vibrant and hardy and the waxy leaves are wonderful.

Coleus (Solenostemon hybrids) is the plant for great leaf color.  Flowers are not significant.  You can winter cuttings indoors.

Browallia or silver bells (Browallia speciosa)  is not so well known and because they hang great for baskets.

Wishbone flower (Torenia fournieri) is another less popular plant great for shade.

Polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya). The leaves are speckled with red, pink, or white dots, giving the plant its common name. Plant height ranges from 9 to 18 inches tall. Polka dot plant performs best in containers and garden beds in partial shade.

Caladium (Caladium bicolor) is a non-hardy bulb.  If you want to winter these over you must dig them up in the fall and store them.  The leaves are big and come in a variety of bold colors.

A few other annuals that tolerate shade or partial shade are: nasturtium (Tropaeolum), flowering tobacco(Nicotiana), pansy (Viola), lobelia (Lobelia), bachelor button (Centaurea), Pinks (Dianthus), bells of Ireland (Moluccella), forget-me-not (Myosotis), baby blue eyes (Nemophila), perilla (Perilla), fuschia (Fuschia), and elephant ear (Colocasia).
